John Dorey, a current Board Member, moved to San Clemente more than 27 years ago and considers it one of the best decisions of his life. His children graduated from San Clemente High School, where both his son and daughter played volleyball for the Tritons. Having grown up in a small town in Northern California, John deeply appreciates the unique small-town feel that San Clemente continues to offer.
John graduated from UC Berkeley with a BS in Business and later earned an MBA from UCLA. He spent time living in Corona del Mar while working in commercial real estate for Coldwell Banker before transitioning to owning his own business, where he specialized in selling corporations for about six years. Over nearly 40 years as an investment banker, he served as a Senior Managing Director for international firms such as Citigroup and McGladrey Capital Markets, focusing on mergers and acquisitions, before retiring in 2012.
John became active in San Clemente’s city government in 1998 during the design phase of the Coastal Trail. He played a key role in bridging the gap between the community and the City to help develop and negotiate the final plans and secure the necessary approvals from multiple rail authorities, ultimately enabling the trail’s completion in 2008. He later served on the City’s Quiet Zone Task Force from 2008 until the Quiet Zone was successfully implemented in 2016.
In 2016, John was selected by the San Clemente City Council to serve on the Beaches, Parks, and Recreation Commission, where he served until 2022. He joined the Friends Foundation Board in 2008, during which time he served four years as Vice President and four years as President. He has also chaired the Golf Tournament, the Carnival, and the Sports Wall of Fame Committee.
John believes strongly in the mission of the Friends Foundation, recognizing it as a vital financial resource for the Parks Department. The Foundation provides scholarships to financially challenged local families so their children can participate in after-school programs they might otherwise be unable to access. It also expands youth programming and transportation opportunities that the City’s annual budget could not support on its own.
